Breathing And The Effect On The Mind - Part 3

What happens when you get into the above situations or when the above starts making a mess of your life is, your middle prefrontal cortex has gone ‘offline.’ That ‘computer’ has shut down and you are running on your base instincts. In other words, you have lost your ability to think rationally.

Think about what this means to our lives. How well do you build relationships if you have little response flexibility? “You are wrong, I am right!” Who wants to be with that person? How well do you do in business if your ability to take necessary, calculated risks is impeded by you being wrapped in fear? The above are some major functions that aid a human being in surviving effectively in today’s very sophisticated world, and when they go offline, the consequences can be great. Thus, the ability to get them under control is of enormous value.

So what do we do about this? First, we need to talk a little about Ivan Pavlov. He was a Russian psychologist and physician that did those experiments with his dogs. He would ring a bell when it was time for them to eat. The aim of the experiment was to see if a link could be created, in the dog’s mind, between ringing the bell and hunger. After a few repetitions of ringing the bell at food time, Ivan noticed that the dogs would salivate, which meant that they were hungry, when he rang a bell.
