Why I Don’t Like Technology - Part 3

For anybody who thinks marketing doesn’t affect people, think about McDonalds. Medical science has proved that McDonalds affects our health negatively. A few years ago, there was that documentary Supersize Me. In it, the presenter was going to eat McDonalds for the next thirty-days for breakfast, lunch and supper. In addition, if the cashier asked, “Do you want cheese with that?” or, “Can I supersize that?” (you need to read those two questions with a cheezy American accent – yes, yes, I may poke  little fun, but I still really want to go to America) he would always reply, “Yes.”

Before his experiment, he went to his doctor for a checkup. The doctor gave him the thumbs up, and he started his research. About half way through, his doctor told him that his health was deteriorating rapidly and that he had to stop now! This is how bad McDonald’s food is for us. Despite that, we’ve turned it into a multi-billion dollar global empire.

Yes, some might argue that that’s an extreme case: no one is going to eat McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and supper. However, the fact that we’ve turned it into a multi-billion dollar global empire, is testament to the fact that we don’t eat McDonalds in moderation, we eat it by the truckload. What’s funny is, at the same time global obesity rates are rocketing as well. This is the true power of advertising: getting people to buy excessive amounts of products that they know is detrimental to their wellbeing.
