Is it ethical to target marketing towards children? ("Tubbie toast," said the zombie...)

The same couple that featured in yesterday’s post (Baby Talk... Good or Bad...) inspire my blog today. The husband was the typical jock: big guy, only seems to have the primitive functions on the brain, i.e.: survival (being an oafish looking bloke) and reproduction (sex).

This day was not going as planned for most of the vendors at this place (I still have to be vague there). The couple was selling decedent, sweet treats to those going past. However, as this bad day continued the oafish man started to change his tactics. He started enticing the teenage boys walking past, to buy his sweet treat and give them to their "dolls" in order to "get some" tonight. As harmless as it sounds, it plants the seen in these 13 and 14-year-old boys and girls, and I don’t agree with it.

Those in the media, who are reading this, will know more about the legal aspect of advertising towards children than me. When I did my advertising diploma, I learned there are laws and guidelines to follow when marketing towards youngsters, through the traditional media. As I explained in a previous post (Why children shouldn't watch scary movies), children, especially children under the age of seven, can’t properly distinguish between fact and fantasy. This makes it very easy to market products and ideas to them and hence the regulations.

Although the children in the story about are in their teens, they still don’t have the required experience to know exactly what is wrong and right for them. Planting that seed can lead to all sorts of things.
